A Japanese Blue Note 12" EP drawing on the immortal 1958 Somethin' Else session: the sunny bounce of "Alison's Uncle" - the session's charming outtake, dedicated to Nat Adderley's new niece and left off the original LP for reasons of space alone - paired with the eternal "Autumn Leaves". Cannonball Adderley with Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey: five names, one perfect studio afternoon, and material so strong the leftovers earned their own release. The Japanese EP format is its own small collecting pleasure - deluxe treatment of essential material, cut loud with generous groove spacing, made for a market that took this music seriously enough to want it in every possible configuration.
Objects like this map how deeply Japan absorbed the Blue Note catalog: not just reissuing it but re-curating it, finding new frames for familiar treasures. A lovely artifact and a genuinely curious corner of the discography, gone quickly whenever it appears.
