Before Jimmy Smith became one of jazz’s most influential organists, there was A New Sound… A New Star (Volume 1)—the 1956 Blue Note debut that announced a bold new presence on the scene.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio with guitarist Thornel Schwartz and drummer Bay Perry, the album puts Smith’s Hammond organ front and center: nimble, muscular and full of blues-inflected swing. He reshapes familiar standards such as “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Oh, Lady Be Good!” and “But Not for Me,” while “You Get ’Cha” and “The Preacher” bring a more personal, groove-driven spark. From the poised warmth of “Tenderly” to the lively snap of “Joy,” the set moves easily between lyrical mood and propulsive improvisation.

This is more than a debut: it captures an artist expanding the possibilities of the jazz organ, turning it into a vivid, commanding voice in the modern jazz trio. A New Sound… A New Star (Volume 1) remains an inviting glimpse of Jimmy Smith at the beginning of a remarkable journey—and a sound that still swings with unmistakable freshness.
