Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, on May 19, 1957, Paul Chambers Quintet captures bassist Paul Chambers leading an exceptional ensemble at the height of the hard-bop era. Released by Blue Note in 1958, the album brings together trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and drummer Elvin Jones.
Chambers is more than the foundation beneath the group: his resonant bass lines and confident solos give the session its unmistakable character. Benny Golson’s “Minor Run-Down” and “Four Strings” provide taut, memorable themes, while Chambers’ own “The Hand of Love” and “Beauteous” reveal his gift for melody. The program also makes room for the graceful standard “What’s New” and a distinctive instrumental reading of “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise."
The result is a beautifully balanced set: muscular yet unhurried, driven by Jones’s alert, propulsive drumming and lifted by the interplay of Byrd, Jordan, and Flanagan. Paul Chambers Quintet puts the bassist firmly in the spotlight while showcasing a band of remarkable individual voices listening and responding as one.
