April 1964, and one of the great Charles Mingus bands playing at the peak of its powers a few weeks before it left for the European tour that would be its last. Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond take the material out to lengths no studio would have permitted, with Mingus talking, shouting instructions and conducting from the bass. What makes the Town Hall recording so valuable is how audibly the music is being assembled in real time: themes emerge, get abandoned, come back transformed. Dolphy's bass clarinet playing here is among the last documented of his life.
