October 1960, and one of the most explosive quartet records ever made. Charles Mingus had Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet, Ted Curson on trumpet and Dannie Richmond on drums, and he ran the session for Nat Hentoff at Candid as a mock nightclub set, complete with an announcement asking the imaginary audience not to talk. What follows is ferocious. "Original Faubus Fables" finally appears with the lyrics Columbia had refused to allow, and Mingus and Richmond sing them at the Governor of Arkansas with undisguised contempt. "What Love" turns into a shouted argument between bass and bass clarinet.

Japanese pressing of the Candid album. Political, furious, funny, and one of the essential records in the entire discography.
