Jimmy Giuffre, a versatile musician known for his innovative jazz compositions and arrangements, took a break from recording after a prolific career spanning from the 1950s. Following a decade focused on live performances, he returned to the studio with "Music for People, Birds, Butterflies and Mosquitoes." Giuffre's unique approach to jazz, fostering free interplay among musicians, emerged during his tenure as an arranger for Woody Herman in the late 1940s. Transitioning to the West Coast cool jazz scene in the 1950s, he later delved into trio formats, blending blues and folk influences. His iconic piece "The Train and the River" showcased his style at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.
In this album, Giuffre showcases his mastery on saxophone, clarinet, flute, and bass flute within a trio setting accompanied by drums and bass. The twelve original compositions reflect his distinctive style with melodic explorations hinting at Eastern influences, delivered in a subdued, chamber music-like manner. Originally released in 1973 on the Choice label, this remastered version preserves the album's integrity with its original title, track sequence, and artwork as intended by the artist.
Remastered by Alex McCollough at True East Mastering, this reissue offers a faithful representation of Giuffre's artistic vision.
