** Rare original copies. Original 1987 LP pressing on Mythic Sounds, numbered edition. Unplayed copies from a dead-stock, minor wear due to ageing on covers. Comes with original hype sticker ** A rare window into the collaborative genius of Charles Mingus, The Rarest On Debut – Charles Mingus Sideman assembles some of the most elusive and captivating sessions from the formative years of modern jazz. Issued as a numbered, limited edition of just 1,000 copies, this Italian compilation brings together previously unissued and hard-to-find tracks recorded in New York City between 1953 and 1957, all restored in rich mono sound.

On Side A, the spotlight falls on the Jimmy Knepper Quintet, with Mingus anchoring the rhythm section alongside Knepper’s trombone, Bill Triglia’s piano, Dannie Richmond’s drums, and Joe Maini’s alto saxophone. Tracks like “Latter Day Saint,” “Cunningbird,” and “Jumpin’ The Blues” showcase the group’s tight interplay and Mingus’s unmistakable presence, while a series of alternate takes and unissued cuts provide insight into the creative process of these jazz innovators.

Side B shifts to a 1953 session with vocalist Don Senay and the Charles Mingus Orchestra, featuring arrangements and conducting by Alonzo Levister. Here, Mingus is joined by a stellar cast including Thad Jones (trumpet), Billy Taylor (piano), Joe Morello (drums), and John La Porta (reeds). The result is a set of lush, swinging performances-“Edge Of Love,” “Fanny,” “Makin’ Whoopee,” and “Portrait”-that blend orchestral color with the spontaneity of jazz improvisation.

Lovingly presented with original cover art by Guy Harloff and art direction by Igino Maj, The Rarest On Debut – Charles Mingus Sideman is more than a collector’s item: it’s a vital document of jazz history, illuminating the breadth of Mingus’s artistry in both sideman and orchestral roles. For fans and collectors alike, this is an essential addition to the Mingus legacy-an invitation to discover the hidden corners of his early career.
