Away from the lectern and the textbooks, John Mehegan was a perfectly capable working pianist with a light touch and an encyclopaedic command of the repertoire, which is what Casual Affair puts on display. Standards, played by a man who had analysed every one of them in print, with the harmonic substitutions of somebody who genuinely knows what he is doing rather than reaching for effect. There is a particular pleasure in hearing a theorist play: nothing is accidental, every voicing has been thought about, and yet it swings perfectly well.
TJ Records pressing. Small-label piano jazz from the man who taught half of New York how to do it.
