condition (record/cover): NM / NM

Edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies.

Better known as a teacher than a player, and one of the most influential figures nobody outside the profession has heard of. John Mehegan taught at Juilliard, wrote the multi-volume Jazz Improvisation books that generations of musicians learned from, reviewed for the New York Herald Tribune, and recorded with Charles Mingus and Max Roach on their own Debut label. From Barrelhouse To Bop is exactly the demonstration record its title promises: a chronological walk through the piano styles of the century, played by someone who could execute all of them and explain why each one worked. Pedagogy as performance, and much more enjoyable than that sounds.

Perspective pressing. Curious, historically minded and genuinely hard to find.
