The 1961 Stockholm material in a second Japanese Enja edition - Dolphy's European recordings circulate in a small ecosystem of pressings and series, and devotees learn them all eventually, usually the enjoyable way. Eric Dolphy abroad was a phenomenon worth dwelling on: no working band of his own, unfamiliar rhythm sections nightly, radio studios and concert halls instead of the New York club grind - and somehow the playing only opened further, alto, flute and bass clarinet each delivering fully formed statements with the generosity apparently bottomless. The 1961 tour tapes collectively form one of the great documented episodes of a musician simply rising to every occasion. These Swedish sessions preserve that travelling inspiration in strong, honest sound.
Same essential session as the companion copy in this sale, different edition for the pressing-minded - and the pressing-minded know who they are. Either way: prime 1961 Dolphy, which is prime Dolphy, which is prime jazz, period.
