Copenhagen, September 1961: Eric Dolphy touring solo through Europe, sitting in with local rhythm sections - and delivering, among other wonders, the unaccompanied bass clarinet reading of "God Bless the Child" that remains one of the most astonishing solo performances ever recorded on any instrument, in any music. One horn, one Billie Holiday standard, and a completeness that needs nothing else: melody, bass line, commentary and cry all present in a single unbroken voice - the whole Dolphy revolution compressed into five minutes that musicians still study like scripture. Around it, the Danish rhythm team keeps honest, game company while the visitor pours out ideas at his usual impossible rate, generous to material and accompanists alike. The European tour tapes caught Dolphy exposed and inspired in equal measure, with nothing between him and the listener.

Japanese Prestige pressing of the first volume of an essential document. For the bass clarinet performance alone: required, full stop.
