John Coltrane

The 1958 session with flugelhornist Wilbur Harden, held in the Prestige vaults and issued once Trane was famous - the label knew exactly what it was sitting on. John Coltrane stretching out on ballads and standards with enormous warmth: this is the lyrical Coltrane too many people skip past on their way to the fireworks, the player who could inhabit a melody so completely that ornamentation became unnecessary. Harden's mellow flugelhorn is the ideal companion voice, all roundness where Trane is all edge. Beautiful, unhurried music from the middle of the Prestige marathon years. Japanese pressing, silent backgrounds for quiet music.
