Wardell Gray played with Basie, cut the legendary tenor battles with Dexter Gordon, and left behind a body of work built on long, singing, logically constructed lines and a tone of real warmth. This second Prestige memorial volume collects sessions from his best years, with rhythm sections of the first rank. Nothing here strains for effect. That is exactly why it lasts.
