Henry Cow were one of the best known and most widely travelled English bands of the progressive era, a cult favourite at home but more popular in continental Europe, and their music has aged remarkably well thanks to the group's diverse influences and uncompromising creativity. Formed in Cambridge in 1968 by Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson, they mixed rock, free improvisation, twentieth-century composition and radical left politics into something entirely their own. Records such as Legend, Unrest and In Praise of Learning, and a spell backing Slapp Happy, made them the flagship of the Rock in Opposition movement they helped found in 1978.
