The title track and the "Suite" catch John Coltrane mid-leap between A Love Supreme and the final music: the devotional architecture still standing, the playing already pushing past its walls. Elvin Jones is titanic here, matching every escalation, and you can hear exactly why this band could go no further and had to transform. Issued posthumously by Impulse!, and among the strongest of all the vault releases - not leftovers but a missing chapter, and a crucial one. The title, as so often with Trane, means precisely what it says. US pressing.
Release notes
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 26 and June 10, 1965. This is the earliest version of this album, it has the joined rainbow boxes style logo, and no ®s around the label logos. A version with the ®s on the labels exists here: [r=12147480].
