McCoy Tyner
McCoy Tyner (1938-2020) was an American jazz pianist from Philadelphia. He was the pianist in the John Coltrane Quartet from 1960 to 1965, playing on A Love Supreme, Crescent and Ballads, and went on to lead his own groups. His chord voicings built on fourths and his heavy, low left hand became trademarks of his playing. Tyner came up in the Philadelphia scene alongside Lee Morgan and Jimmy Heath and briefly joined Benny Golson and Art Farmer's Jazztet. His debut as a leader, Inception, came out on Impulse! in 1962.
