1961: John Coltrane's Spanish-tinged modal epic, and his magnificent farewell to Atlantic. The lineup is a dream - Eric Dolphy (contractually disguised as George Lane), Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, and the two-bass team of Reggie Workman and Art Davis churning underneath like a dark sea. The title track is eighteen minutes of pure hypnosis: flamenco shadows, drones, Dolphy's flute flying over everything, Trane building and building with that inexhaustible intensity. Cut in the same season as the Africa/Brass sessions, and breathing the same expansive air. One of his finest hours on any label. Japanese pressing.
