Recorded live in 1967, at the height of the quartet's improbable crossover moment, when Charles Lloyd was being written about in the rock press and playing ballrooms rather than clubs. Journey Within catches the band stretching out in front of an audience that had arrived expecting something psychedelic and got a great deal of very serious jazz instead. Keith Jarrett is extraordinary here, already using the inside of the piano and pushing at the form; Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette build enormous momentum. Lloyd floats over the top of it with that light, singing tenor sound and lets them work.
