The 1963 European tour, quartet in prime condition, on the collectors' label Jazz Galore - one of those releases that circulated among the faithful long before official vault programs existed, passed hand to hand like samizdat. John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones working the repertoire hard in front of a German audience: the versions stretch, the intensity climbs, and the band's nightly telepathy is on full display. For those who need every documented night of the classic quartet - and we understand that need completely, we suffer from it ourselves - this is a necessary acquisition. Part One of the evening.
