December 9th, 1964, one session, four men, four movements. There is not much left to say about A Love Supreme that has not been said badly, so: John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones playing a suite built on a four-note cell that Coltrane eventually sings out loud, moving through resolution, pursuit, penance and psalm. Elvin's cymbal work alone would justify the record. What still startles is the discipline of it: no waste, no showboating, thirty-three minutes and a completely unambiguous shape. The most listened-to avant-garde record ever made, and it earned that position honestly.
