Peter Kowald

Peter Kowald (1944 to 2002) was one of the most important figures in European free jazz and free improvisation, and a central voice on the double bass. A founding member of the Globe Unity Orchestra with Alexander von Schlippenbach, he played on the earliest recordings of Peter Brötzmann, including Machine Gun, and helped invent the language of the German scene at its beginning. A tireless traveller, he spent decades building bridges between the European, American and Asian improvising scenes and hosting musicians in his Wuppertal loft.
