Han Bennink, born in Zaandam in 1942, is a Dutch drummer, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist, and the most radical drumming export Holland has produced. Known to solo with anything that will augment his kit, from clogs to a fire alarm to the floor itself, he is by turns profoundly traditional and wildly revolutionary, as at home with a swing standard as with total abstraction. He played on Eric Dolphy's Last Date (1964), co-founded the Instant Composers Pool with Misha Mengelberg and Willem Breuker in 1967, and has worked with everyone from Cecil Taylor and Derek Bailey to Peter Brötzmann and the ICP Orchestra.
