Four pianists, four entirely incompatible solutions to the same problem. Bud Powell invented the bop piano vocabulary and paid for it with his health; Oscar Peterson took that vocabulary and applied a technique of frightening completeness; Bill Evans ignored most of it and rebuilt the instrument around voicings and touch; Wynton Kelly quietly became the man everybody actually wanted in the rhythm section. Putting them on one double LP drawn from the Verve holdings makes the differences audible in a way that separate albums never quite do. A survey record that functions as an argument.
