The 1966 Vanguard return on another Impulse! edition - John Coltrane's last great live album released in his lifetime. The band with Pharoah Sanders and Rashied Ali plays music that is dense, ecstatic and completely uncompromising: "My Favorite Things" transformed yet again, "Naima" turned inside out, every familiar landmark rebuilt at higher altitude. This is not background listening, and it was never meant to be - it demands the whole of your attention and repays it with something very close to the sublime. Exactly as it should be. For anyone tracing the final arc of the greatest journey in jazz, an unavoidable station.
