Two sets, five years apart, and one of the more inspired pieces of Columbia repackaging. Side one is Miles Davis at Newport in 1958 with the sextet at its absolute peak: John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley in the front line, Bill Evans at the piano, and a version of "Ah-Leu-Cha" taken at a tempo that sounds like a dare. Side two is Thelonious Monk in 1963 with Charlie Rouse, playing the book with that peculiar mixture of stride, dissonance and dead space that nobody has ever successfully imitated. The pairing also nods at the famous 1954 studio session neither man ever fully explained.
