Philharmonic Hall, New York, September 1973, and the loudest, dirtiest, most confrontational band Miles Davis ever put on a stage. Two guitars, Michael Henderson playing bass lines that owe everything to Sly Stone and nothing to jazz, Al Foster and Mtume locking the rhythm into something closer to a machine than a groove, and Miles out front through a wah-wah pedal playing fragments rather than solos. Almost no melody, almost no harmony, just texture and enormous rhythmic pressure sustained across four sides. Critics loathed it at the time. It sounds now like it was recorded in the future.
Japanese CBS/Sony pressing, double LP with gatefold. Not the entry point. If you already know where this period goes, it is one of the peaks.
