By 1984 the eighties band was fully formed and Miles Davis was leaning hard on synthesisers, electronic drums and the production instincts of Robert Irving III. Decoy is the most abstract record of that period: cold, jittery, full of sequenced textures and sudden dropouts, with John Scofield playing guitar lines that sound like they are being interrupted mid-thought and Darryl Jones holding an implacable bottom. A young Branford Marsalis guests on soprano. Miles plays through a wah-wah, sparingly, and the sparseness is the point. Not the warmest thing he made, and one of the most forward-facing.
