1985, and after a decade of Weather Report Wayne Shorter makes a solo record that sounds like nothing else in his catalogue. Atlantis is almost entirely composed: layered synthesisers, wordless voices, woodwind textures, and structures that unfold like written pieces rather than heads followed by solos. Shorter's soprano moves through it as one voice among many rather than as the leader out front. It divided people at the time, because the jazz audience wanted him to go back to the Blue Note book, and it has aged into one of the most quietly ambitious things he did. Dense, patient, oddly beautiful.

Japanese CBS/Sony pressing. The record where Shorter the composer finally took precedence over Shorter the soloist.
