By 1980 Dexter Gordon had come home from fourteen years in Copenhagen to an American welcome nobody expected, and Columbia gave him budgets to match. Gotham City spends them well: Woody Shaw on trumpet, Cedar Walton at the piano, Percy Heath on bass, Art Blakey behind the kit and George Benson turning up to play actual jazz guitar for the first time in years. Gordon's tone at this stage is enormous and unhurried, phrases landing far behind the beat, quoting freely, working the ballads like a man with all the time in the world. Which, as it turned out, he did not have.
