Leaney's lyrical and multi-textured tenor and alto saxophone playing is featured throughout, as is his playing on the Zimbabwean mbira and west African flulani flute. The record comprises equally of planned and deeply rehearsed compositions by both Leaney and Thouin, each with their own flavour brewed together to form a uniquely organic music. This is the first documented studio recording of 83 year old Thouin's lifelong exploration in sound and rhythm featuring his folkloric, DIY hybrid setup behind the drums; double kick and frame drums, tablas, Tibetan singing bowls, bells, Japanese gongs and cymbals. The music focuses deeply on the intersectionality of Leaney’s Indo-Caribbean heritage, Thouin’s multiple exoduses to India to study with tabla guru Karamuthulla and their shared approach as jazz improvisors despite their age gap of four decades.
The recording was lovingly engineered by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem In My Heart) at Thee Mighty Hotel2Tango between November 23-25, 2021 and mixed by Moumneh and Leaney between November 25-27th, 2021.
