"Sound Is, is delightfully not what I had expected when this fine disc arrived, a beautiful soundscape, awash with more layerings and hypnotic cinematic virtues than I would ever hope to find. Though while saying that, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the ultra fine hazy jazz that both effortlessly, and rambunctiously flows through this release, and stands not starkly in juxtaposition to the soundscape, but gives it the vibrant life necessary to keep you quietly swinging at 4 in the morning, where the edges are only hinted at, and the rhythms slip in between your dreams like shooting stars.
Pulling this album together was no easy task, reminding me of experimental/improvisational ambient pieces from the 50’s and 60’s that for some reason just didn’t sit right with me, but work here like a breath of cool fresh air. There’s an element of rock found on Sound Is, making this release sound a bit like Indie Jazz, if you’ll allow me to limb out on that limb. Perhaps what's most unexpected is the crew that’s been assembled for this project, where you’ll find Rob Mazurek on cornet, synth, and piano ecc. Jason Adasiewicz on vibraphone, Matthew Lux on bass guitar, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass and piano, and John Herndon on drums and percussion. Look these guys up, they all come from bands you know and love, and allow Sound Is to soar with lightly driving rhythms, colourful harmonies, and a texturing that feels like silk as it drapes over you. Much thanks to Delmark Records, where if they don’t have it, you don’t need it. " streetmouse - RateYourMusic
