War Pur War is a key artifact of West‑Berlin’s wild mid‑1980s, a collaboration between composer, radio dramatist and performance artist Frieder Butzmann and author‑artist Thomas Kapielski. Originally released on the Berlin label Zensor in 1987, the album quickly slipped into obscurity, selling little at the time but later becoming a sought‑after rarity for those tracing the fault lines between minimal electronics, post‑punk satire and Dada‑inflected sound art. Recent reissues by Bureau B have restored it to circulation, remastered and expanded with bonus tracks, unpublished photos and liner notes by Butzmann.
Butzmann had been exploring experimental music since the late 1960s, moving through tape pieces, performance and early minimal electronics. Kapielski, meanwhile, operated as a true Berlin “Universalkünstler” – writer, musician, painter and self‑styled “Nutzkünstler,” emerging from the milieu of revolts and theory‑drunk publishing houses. When the two began working together in the early 1980s, they developed a shared language that treated sound as both material and joke, folding everyday noises, fragments of speech and cheap electronics into compositions that refused to take sense for granted.
On War Pur War, that language is fully formed. Most of the pieces are minimalist tracks interspersed with sonic detritus: snatches of conversation, environmental sounds, radio residues. Synth lines and drum‑machine figures sketch simple, often stiff patterns that verge on electro‑pop, only to be derailed by abrupt cuts, spoken interjections or collage‑like intrusions. A German review aptly describes the record as “konservierte Dada‑Signale aus der Mauerstadt,” preserved Dada signals from the walled city: music that feels less like songs and more like broadcasts from a place where meaning has been deliberately scrambled.
