** Limited edition release of 550 ** World Without Form by Nat Birchall was originally released in 2012 on CD format only, the album is now being made available on vinyl for the first time, in two separate volumes because of the length of the recording. Each of the two volumes also contain a previously unreleased track from the sessions. Volume 1 has ‘Ithnaan’ which is an earlier version of the track released as ‘Man From Varanasi’ on Nat’s ‘Cosmic Language’ album. On this album Nat expanded the group on some tracks with a second bassist and a percussionist, both adding to the energy and rhythmic density of the group sound.
The core group is a quintet comprising the same musicians who, the following year, travelled to Greece and recorded the universally acclaimed double LP, Live in Larissa, (which featured extended versions of four of the songs from World Without Form). Alongside Nat on tenor/soprano saxophones and percussion are Adam Fairhall – piano, Nick Blacka – bass, Paul Hession – drums and Corey Mwamba – vibraphone. On some tracks Jon Thorne (bass) and/or Andy Hay (percussion) are added, turning the quintet into a sextet or septet.
The album has a very broad musical palette and covers a wide range of rhythmic concepts and moods from lush lyricisim to high energy roiling intensity and stately swinging elegance. Volume 2 to follow soon.
