Stries
Bernard Parmegiani (1927–2013), the grand old man of French electroacoustic music, did not write much music for tape with live performers. Among them is “Stries” for the unusual combi- nation of three live synthesizer players and tape.  Until recently, “Stries” had not been played live for some 30 years. This is the first complete recording, only part of it had been previously released on LP on the INA/GRM label.  “Stries” was written for the three synthesizer players of the Paris- based electro…
The Works for Piano 11: Cheap Imitation
All of these works by Cage are influenced by Satie. Cage’s friend and colleague Morton Feldman made an arrangement of Cage’s solo piano “Cheap Imitation” for a trio of piano, flutes/piccolo and glockenspiel. Feldman’s admiration for the pianist Aki Takahashi caused him to gift this arrangement to her. And, full circle, we have the repertoire of this album.  The major discovery is Feldman’s arrangement of Cheap Imitation for this very Feldmanesque instrumental ensemble. It is unknown why Feldman …
Memory in Motion: Percussion in Surround
“Memory in Motion: Percussion in Surround” was a research project developed to examine how percussionists memorize musical actions within ensembles. As part of this research, director Aiyun Huang commissioned new works to compliment selected existing repertoire. Zihua Tan wrote Sorites to compliment Iannis Xenakis’ Persephassa and Alcides Lanza wrote mnais mnemes to compliment his own earlier composition sensor VI. In both cases, the composers were asked to use the identical setup and notational…

Luna Cinese
At long last, after decades out of print, the Milan based imprint, Dialogo, dives into the legendary catalog of Cramps, bringing forth the first ever vinyl reissue of Costin Miereanu's "Luna Cinese", part of an ongoing initiative dedicated to bring the imprint’s seminal output back into the light. Easily one of the most singular and important experimental albums of the 1970s that remains as engrossing, creatively riveting, and as ahead of its time today as it was in 1975, this is as exciting as …

Beuys Laughing
In early 1974 Joseph Beuys, Klaus Staeck and Gerhard Steidl sat in a Boeing 747 from New York to Düsseldorf, returning home after Beuys’ American tour. The trip had been a controversial success, and its every stage carefully documented by Staeck and Steidl in videos, photographs and audio their trusty Sony TC-50 cassette recorder was always at Beuys’ side during his lectures, conferences and workshops. To relieve the boredom of the flight, the three listened to some of the recordings and Beuys s…

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the CD release of a Philippe Sarde and André Téchiné double-header: Barocco and Les Soeurs Brontë.   Barocco (1976) stars Isabelle Adjani and Gérard Dépardieu in a Hitchcock-like thriller, strongly inspired by the doppelgänger plot of Vertigo. He traces events that redefined jazz’s role in the broadband arts movement as well as the changing social and political landscap…

McKenzie, in 1991 when he was visiting Iceland with artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff. This was the beginning of a fruitful collaboration which lasted for several years. Orbed Porches
Cult of Riggonia is a psychedelic collective from Macon, Georgia, building from a mixture of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band’s spastic attitude, Animal Collective-like blunt surreal imagery, a Gong approach at multilayered composition and the rhythmic chorality of central-African music. The project is pure oozing waves of textures and superlunary snappy melodies as just expelled from the primordial stew.  Singing full texts in a language of their own invention and known for the energy of th…
Java Scripts
Jung Deejay is the solo endeavor of NYC's Randy Riback. Originally focused on his first-ever solo project Jung Hardware in 2017, he changed his approach the following year to focus on more "dated" sounds akin to an obsolete MIDI studio. After two solo releases under the moniker: “Wave Idea” on Lillerne Tapes and “7 Sketches for Akai Sampler” on Beer on the Rug, JD returns with a new cassette to accomplish his ideal three-ouvres on alluring sample patterns and naive, native digital imagery. On Ja…
