Hippie Gospel Songs 1969-70
Postmodern artist, dancer, choreographer, and writer Simone Forti originally wrote the Hippie Gospel Songs in 1969/70, around the time of the Woodstock Festival. She explains: "before coming to California where I started working and performing with Charlemagne Palestine and studying Tai Chi at the California Institute of the Arts, I had spent a year in Woodstock, New York, stoned in the woods. Now with Charlemagne at the piano I ran in circles and figure eights." The seven songs on the record we…
Raga Yaman,15 March 1986
Double LP version. Unreleased archival recordings as performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Around ten years ago, deep into a cozy and hazy night following a concert with my sound brothers Daniel O'Sullivan and Kristoffer Rygg in London (as Æthenor), they graciously introduced me to a recording of rudra veena (a kind of noble deeper bass relative to the sitar, in a way) as performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Dhrupad, for those who do not know, is a branch of Hindustani cla…

Mad River
180gram High Definition Vinyl, originally released in 1968 on Capitol; by far the most ominous-sounding of the Bay Area’s 1960s psychedelic bands, the music of Berkeley’s Mad River comes across like a spiralling, acid-spiked descent into hell. With a raw, garagey style marked by Lawrence Hammond’s quavering vocals and the interlocking exchanges of guitarists David Robinson and Rick Bockner, Mad River’s sound conjures a darker, more menacing version of Quicksilver Messenger Servic…
Freak Out
2017 release. One of the most ambitious debuts in rock history, Freak Out! was a seminal concept album that somehow foreshadowed both art rock and punk at the same time. Its four LP sides deconstruct rock conventions right and left, eventually pushing into territory inspired by avant-garde classical composers. Yet the album is sequenced in an accessibly logical progression; the first half is dedicated to catchy, satirical pop/rock songs that question assumptions about pop music, setting the tone…

I Was Crossing A Bridge
2021 repress. On the leading edge of NYC’s underground music scene, Vito Ricci produced only a handful of self-released cassettes and one LP between 1983-1985 with most of his work being recorded for experimental theatre and performance art pieces. All produced and assembled by hand in a pure DIY spirit.Shipping this week** Separated from both its reputation and its sleeve art, the music of Muslimgauze explores the relationship of visual sensations -- space, color, depth, illusion -- to the listening experience. Make sure to check for the kinky downstroke of Facedance and the 4th world dimensions of Niagara / Spomenici for something close to Conny Plank’s work on Les Vampyrettes, and definitely Fortirer et R…

Singapore A-Go-Go
Sublime Frequencies works its way down to the tip of the Malaysian peninsula with this superb collection of Singaporean '60s beat, pop, and "off-beat cha-cha" classics from original vinyl 45s. These 22 supercharged beat-a-go-go tracks defy a common held belief that the Chinese couldn't rock, groove, or swing back in the 1960s. The vocals are sung in the dialects of Mandarin and Hokkien and they soar with catchy hooks atop groovy, clever beats. There's plenty of electric guitar, organ, and…

Planetarium
Post-Nuclear Mind Music? Lizard Strategies? Void Spirit...? These bizarre titles are just a few of the self-coined terms that Australian electronic musician Ian MacFarlane has conjured to represent his eccentric sonic world. An artist whose unique style of electronic experimentalism has balanced dangerously close to the edge of popular convention, existing outside the mainstream and extending well beyond the fringe of any sanctioned independent scene. A futurist outsider whose extraordina…
