Goblin

Goblin got the job because somebody else walked away. Dario Argento had commissioned the score for Profondo Rosso from the jazz composer Giorgio Gaslini, the collaboration broke down, and a young Roman progressive rock band was called in at short notice. The record that came out of it sold in numbers nobody in Italian film music had seen, and fixed the sound of the genre for a decade: a bass figure that will not let go, an electric harpsichord, a children's melody played too slowly. Suspiria followed in 1977, then Dawn of the Dead for George Romero. The group has split and reassembled under half a dozen variations of its own name ever since, which is what happens when the name is worth more than the contract.
