Junji Hirose

Junji Hirose is a Japanese saxophonist and noise musician, born in 1955 in Kokubunji, Tokyo, and active in free jazz and improvised music since the late 1970s. Alongside tenor and soprano saxophone he plays SSI (self-made sound instruments), tabletop setups built from household objects and junk that he has developed since the 1980s. Each version carries a number, such as SSI-4 or SSI-6, and several give their names to his solo records. Hirose formed the trio Free Expansion in 1979 and released his first solo album, Solo Saxophone, in 1981.
