Otomo Yoshihide, born in Yokohama in 1959, is a Japanese guitarist, turntablist and composer who has moved through almost every corner of experimental music. He played in rock bands at college, took lessons from the guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi and turned to improvisation after discovering Derek Bailey and Kaoru Abe. At Tokyo University he studied ethnomusicology, focusing on Japanese wartime pop and on instruments of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, sounds that surface in his records. Ground Zero in the 1990s, the New Jazz Orchestra and Quintet, the near silent electronics of Filament with Sachiko M, film and television scores, and Project Fukushima!, founded after the 2011 disaster, show the range of a musician who is also a public figure in Japan.
