Masahiko Satoh
Masahiko Satoh, born in Tokyo in 1941, is a Japanese pianist and composer and one of the most versatile figures in the country's jazz. He studied at Berklee in the 1960s, and on returning to Japan moved freely between straight-ahead trio jazz, big-band writing, film and television scores and the far edge of free improvisation. His duo with the drummer Stomu Yamash'ta, the orchestral Yamataifu, and encounters with Wolfgang Dauner, the Globe Unity Orchestra and Attila Zoller show one side; the solo piano of Amorphism and his electronic experiments show another.
