One of the central figures in postwar Japanese jazz, and one of the least categorisable. Masahiko Satoh studied at Berklee, came home and proceeded to work simultaneously in free improvisation, big band writing, electronic music, film scoring and outright experimental composition, apparently without regarding these as separate activities. The solo piano recordings are where his thinking is clearest: long-form structures built from a very small amount of material, an attack that can be percussive to the point of violence, and an approach to the instrument that owes as much to Cecil Taylor and to European modernism as to any jazz lineage.

Japanese Denon pressing, superb sound. Japanese solo piano of the seventies remains one of the great under-explored areas.
