Original 1976 LP on Denon with Cage's landmark 1946-48 compositions for prepared piano superbly performed by Yuji Takahashi in 1975. With insert.

John Cage composed the sixteen sonatas and four interludes between 1946 and 1948, inserting screws, bolts, rubber and plastic between the strings so that each key sounds like a small gong, a dry drum or a muted bell. Shaped by his reading on Indian aesthetics, the cycle remains the summit of his writing for prepared piano.

Yuji Takahashi, who had studied with Iannis Xenakis, recorded it in Tokyo in December 1975 with Denon's own PCM digital system, years ahead of Western studios, and the instrument's strange timbres come through with rare clarity. Issued in 1976 in the Music Experimental series.
