Julius Eastman wrote Crazy Nigger for an unspecified number of like instruments, here four pianos, and it unfolds over almost an hour in a single arc. Repeated notes and chords pile up, shift by small degrees and gradually thicken into a dense, ringing mass, a method Eastman called organic music, where each section contains the material of the one before it.
The performance comes from a concert at Northwestern University in January 1980, with Eastman joined by Frank Ferko, Janet Kattas and Patricia Martin. It first appeared on the Unjust Malaise CD set. This is its first vinyl issue, a 2018 edition of 300 on purple vinyl, with notes by Mary Jane Leach and Bradford Bailey.
