Julius Eastman wrote Evil Nigger and Gay Guerrilla in 1979, two of the pieces with deliberately provocative titles he grouped with Crazy Nigger. Both are scored for any number of like instruments, here four pianos, and grow from insistent repeated notes and octaves into dense, ringing masses. Near its climax Gay Guerrilla brings in Luther's chorale Ein feste Burg.
Eastman is joined by Frank Ferko, Janet Kattas and Patricia Martin in the 1980 Northwestern University concert first issued on the New World 3CD Unjust Malaise. This is the first vinyl edition, 300 copies on purple 180g vinyl, mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, with notes by Mary Jane Leach and Bradford Bailey.
