Béla Bartók wrote The Miraculous Mandarin as a pantomime on a scenario by Menyhért Lengyel, and its violence kept it off most stages for years; the concert suite, Op. 19, keeps the music up to the chase, with its brutal ostinatos and wailing clarinet. The Dance Suite of 1923 was commissioned for the fiftieth anniversary of the union of Buda and Pest, and weaves Hungarian, Romanian and Arab inflections into a single folk language of Bartók's own invention.
Bruno Maderna conducts the Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo. The recording received the Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles Cros, and the cover reproduces a painting by Pierre Soulages.
