Béla Bartók wrote his two sonatas for violin and piano in 1921 and 1922, for the Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Arányi. They are among his most harmonically daring works, with the two instruments often moving in independent keys, the violin's long recitative lines set against hard, percussive piano writing.
The First is a broad three-movement piece, the Second shorter and in two linked movements, its finale close to the fiddle music Bartók had collected in the villages. Pinchas Zukerman plays with Marc Neikrug, in a CBS Masterworks digital recording produced by Steve Epstein and issued in 1982.
