The second opera in Glass's portrait trilogy, commissioned by the City of Rotterdam and premiered there on 5 September 1980 (Netherlands Opera Company, directed by David Pountney, sets by Robert Israel). Three acts named for the figures who influenced Gandhi's satyagraha philosophy: Tolstoy, Tagore, Martin Luther King. Libretto by Glass and Constance DeJong, drawn from the Bhagavad Gita and sung in Sanskrit.
The 1985 CBS recording is by the New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus under Christopher Keene, with Douglas Perry as Gandhi (tenor), Claudia Cummings (Miss Schlesen, soprano), Rhonda Liss (Kasturbai, alto), Robert McFarland (Kallenbach / Prince Arjuna, baritone), Scott Reeve (Rustomji / Lord Krishna, bass) and Sheryl Woods (Mrs Naidoo, soprano). Produced by Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman. Dutch pressing. The work draws on conventional orchestral forces, where Einstein had used only the Glass Ensemble.
