Anton Webern

Country: Austria

Anton Webern (1883-1945) was an Austrian composer and conductor, born in Vienna. With his teacher Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg he formed the core of the Second Viennese School. Webern wrote short, highly concentrated works and adopted twelve-tone technique in the mid-1920s. After his death his music became a model for the serial composers of the postwar avant-garde, championed by René Leibowitz, Pierre Boulez and Robert Craft. Webern began studying with Schoenberg in 1904 and took a doctorate in musicology under Guido Adler. The tone poem Im Sommerwind dates from 1904, the Passacaglia Op.
