Four years have passed since the release of Jon Collin's majestic Bridge Variations on Discreet Music, arguably one of the most defining and well-received releases on the label. Works is the first LP under the Early Music artist name - first the title of a 2015 solo LP, then a name for a label before being used for a couple of recent cassette releases - and was recorded in Stockholm over a nine-month period last year. The main instrumentation is again the keyed fiddle - a traditional Swedish folk instrument that has existed and been played in one form or another for more than 600 years - with additional strings and environmental recordings as well as some percussion courtesy of Ryan Packard. Works was recorded in dialogue with construction work taking place across the street from the main recording location, and these sounds are themselves an important part of the record's instrumentation. Big-sounding, timeless and absolutely gorgeous music.
