Released 31 March 1986. Glass wanted to find out what a song would sound like written by someone whose adult life had been spent in concert music. Six pieces. Lyrics commissioned from four songwriters: David Byrne (Liquid Days), Paul Simon (Changing Opinion, Open the Kingdom), Suzanne Vega (Freezing, Lightning) and Laurie Anderson (Forgetting). Glass set the words, then he, Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman cast the singers.
Vocals are by Linda Ronstadt, The Roches, Douglas Perry, Bernard Fowler and Janice Pendarvis. The Kronos Quartet plays the string parts on Freezing. Robert Mapplethorpe photograph on the cover. Recorded at The Living Room (NYC) and The Complex (LA). The album became Glass's best-selling LP to that point: a record that found pop radio without compromising the Glass Ensemble's vocabulary.
