Live quartet of Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide, Chris Pitsiokos and Tatsuya Nakamura, recorded at Goodman in Tokyo on September 1, 2024.

On the Impossibility of Change documents one night at Goodman in Tokyo, on September 1, 2024. The evening opened with duets between alto saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos and each of his three partners, Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide and Tatsuya Nakamura, and closed with the four of them together: the quartet set is the whole of this album.

Haino plays guitar and also uses his voice, flutes and the suona; Otomo plays guitar with occasional voice and mouth sounds; Pitsiokos is on alto saxophone and Nakamura on drum set and percussion. The music is credited to all four. The sequence opens with The World of Appearances and closes with Returning to the World of Appearances, and every piece in between is titled with the number one in a different language or notation: One, Ichi, 1, Eins, Un, I.

Mastered by Werner Dafeldecker. Art and design by Katharina Huber, from a photograph by Pitsiokos.

Limited edition of 550 CDs on Eleatic Records, the label run by Chris Pitsiokos.
